Thumbs up

Why do English riders wear those tall boots? I know they have a good reason just can't understand why. LOL not a fashion statement.

Please help me out just trying to learn. Thanks

It is a combination of tradition from fields hunters and practicality to protect your legs.
The tall boots were originally made to protect the inside of your calfs from chafing and the rest of the leg from being injured from shrubbery etc. while riding. The boots are also made in such a way the they offer support to the ankle.
99% of the english apparel is based on tradition from the original British field hunters. (fox hunting)
Hope this helps,
Megan

it also gives you a bit of "stick" to the saddle flaps.

I'm probably going to invest in some tall boots this year, the half chaps and paddock boots are leaving me bruised because of the way the thin stirrup leather hangs. it pinches! OWW!

Well then if say a person rode in an oh I don't LOL a dressage saddle they would learn to keep their legs still or get piniched right?

They really don't need hight boots if they were just trail riding right?

Lots of people ride without them. Especially in a more casual setting. While they do help keep you from getting pinched, half-chaps will do the same thing, and are MUCH easier to get on and off

That's what I do when riding. I wear the half-chaps even when using my western saddle. It just helps with the brush and briars, and even in a western, they give you more grip

i hate tall boots!!! you have to have anorexic calves to get the darn things on and off

i only ride english and i usually ride in track pants or stretchy pants with half chaps and cheap shoes with a heel, i like the way the suede sticks to the side of the horse PLUS it is much much cheaper than buying the boots..but i also don't show so i don't need to be a fancy pants :P

sure, until you use your leg to cue an aid like canter lead or flying lead change or piaffe.

if you're just trailriding you don't *need* then, but I would suggest chaps to protect your legs from branches

Kya, have you ever noticed that ranch cowboys wear their pants tucked in to tall top boots when they are riding? It's like the same thing. They are protecting their legs and clothes from the elements like brush, and wear from the saddle. Just alittle tid bit of information.
