Happy New year all.....
As the new year is here... breeding and foaling season is around the corner... If you are breeding, or foaling this year please keep this in mind.. you may need Colostrum for your new born foal.. And THERE IS REALLY NONE WITH OUT PEOPLE COLLECTING IT.. dont think you can get it , from a Vet... so please if you are foaling, take the time to collect some from your mare.. A small amount taken will not harm your foal.. the strongest Colostrum taken is in the 1st 8 hours after foaling or leaking... I find it is very easy to collect aspecially when the foal starts nursing you will notice that a stream starts flowing and newborns do lose alot , as it just hits the ground to go to waste. So I just use a plastic rubber container or margarine container and catch it as the foal is nursing, from the other teat. Sometimes the mare just start leaking with out the foal.. and this is a great time to catch it too.. Colostrum is only the 1st milk flow in the 1st 24 hours, really the strongest in the 1st 8-12 hours and this is the best time to collect it... then let is cool slowly@ room temp 1st then fridge it for a hour, then freeze. It also helps if you can strain it through some cheese cloth.. if you can, so you dont have to later when you thaw.. if you can't thats ok just freeze and date it , as its good for 2 years.... remember when you thaw, never do it in a microwave only @ room Temp, or you will lose strength... Also for mares that start leaking before foaling ... remember to catch your colostrum too. I will be helping people this year establisth a Colostrum bank for local people in BC I am willing to store every one's little bit they collect from there own mare hoping it fills a greater need later... Every little bit helps... All I can tell you is, in my hunting last year when I needed it.. it was pretty scary, because none was around... NOTHING... I was lucky I had some time to track it down because, I have a NI mare and could make arrangements before foaling... But if you have a Emergency... chances are you WILL NOT find any... So I can not stress enough how much we need every little bit from every one.. There is a great site you can go to as well and register if you have alot of Colostrum.. or you need to find out how to Store and freeze..your Colostrum PLease check this site so you are all prepared... www.cyberfoal.com or email me if you would like me to store you little bit of Colostrum as part of a bank for others.... There are several colostrum products on the market that work wonders. They are not all that cheep but good to have around.
If you can not get that wich is very easy you can use cow milk from the first 3 days after calving. 1st day is best but it will still work. For me that is not to hard to get b/c I worked for 1 1/2 years at a dairy and most likely can get it easy enough. |

it is the mares first milk and contains the anti bodies the foal needs to survive. With out it the foal will become susceptible to infection of some kind. The milk will contain these anti bodies for about 48-72 hours but the foal can only proses them for the first 18 hours. All animals produce colostrum at time of foaling or birth of offsprings.
