I'm not completely numb to this, I know that self board you do all the work yourself, and for full board, the person owning the stable does most of the work for you, but what does co-op board do? And, for full and self board, where do you draw the line between what work is done and what work isn't?
I'm sure a few of you smart boarders can figure this out I'd love to know for future knowledge so I don't feel completely out of the loop all the time, hehe. Thanks ahead of time!-Natalie |

I'm not sure about co-op board?? but
Self Board usually consists of this: owner supplies all grain&hay, cleans stall/paddock, turns out in the AM and brings them back in in the PM. Sometimes you can arrange for semi-self board which is where the property owner will feed your prepared feed ration, and turn out in the AM (put on fly mask etc) but you turn the horse in at night ,sometimes a self board will include this also. Full Board...Property/stable owner will supply all feed (except speciality items)turn in and out AM & PM and have the stall/paddock cleaned for you, plus put on blankets etc. Sometimes they will include a worming and vitamins/minerals really depends on the establishment. Hope this helps abit

Self Board: Horse owner pays for space provided by barn owner, could include a stall or just turnout with a run-in. Horse owner pays for own grain, hay and shavings. Horse owner cleans own stall. Horse owner feeds & waters own horse. Horse owner turns horse out and puts horse in. Horse owner may or may not have to contribute to stall/run-in/fence maintenance. Horse owner may or may not have to supply own food and water troughs.
Full Board: Horse owner pays barn owner to do it all. Barn owner pays for feed, hay, mucks stalls, turns horses out and brings them in. If horse owner wants a different feed, they usually have to pay the difference in the costs. Horse owner pays for more hay if they want more hay given. Co-Op Board: Usually a group of Self boarders who all group together and share chores, mostly feeding, watering and turnout, occasionally mucking. Chores are rotated in the group by day or week. Sometimes one person works midnights and is available to do morning chores on the way home and another person works days and does night chores on the way home. Makes it so that there is a fall-back in case an owner has an emergency or is unable to come out for a reason. Good support group.

Co-op board can also be one of these
Barn owner supplies all or some of feed but rest is taken care of by horse owner Barn owner does one or more feeding but feed is supplied by horse owner and mucking out is done by owner. Barn owner supplies feed, and does turnout/feeding but horse owner mucks out. |

Hmm...okay, so Co-op board can also be a sharing of work between the horse owner and the stable manager? Or...like a combination of Self and Full board?
PS. Natalie, you have the best name in the world. Hah, because it's mine too, and yours...and lots of people's...and I'll stop now

For most placesI agree with everyone on here.
At the new barn I am moving to on the 26th it is self board and they put the blanket onand off, turn out and feed prepared food in the am and we clean our stalls and tunr in and feed in pm. It is kind of a co-op cause you can trade off doing stalls and stuff with other people and also we all pitch in like $60 everytiome we need shavings and that is about 3 times a year soit is like $180 a year which I think is better than byuuing them ourselves.

I know you've gotten a lot of responses already but figured I would add my 2 cents in as well.
At my barn I don't provide self board but I used to... When I did include it it was as follows: AM breakfast was given if it was already made up and sitting in front of the stall. Turn-out was done for ALL horses. Owner was to come down and clean their stall, fill their water buckets, feed, bring-in, and groom their own horse. If needed I would occasionally change blankets/fly masks. I now have my barn as semi or full board only. Semi board includes your basic feed. Extras like MSM, B1, or other things like that have to be provided by the owner. I provide good quality local hay and good quality grain (I have a few different kinds on hand at all times as I know different horses require different feed). The owner is to clean their own stall, fill their water bucket, and groom their own horse... We have a special turn in/out rotation so everyone takes turns, including myself. I get all the grain and hay ready as I like to have control of what the horses in the barn are eating... If there's a horse that is over or under weight it gets pinned on me no matter what so I figured why not take responsibility for it and make sure it doesn't happen. Full board... Everything is done for you

Here at our barn, it works like this:
Full Board: We muck your stall. Buy feed and feed your horse AM + PM. Put on blankets, fly masks, ect. is specified. Turn out / Bring in AM + PM, and give hay (if specified / whatever amount is specified.) BUT, we are a horse rescue and we have many rescue-owned horses here, along with (currently, 11 boarders) and as a rule to be a boarder here (as we are VERY cheap, only $235 p/month for full board) you MUST help out with the Rescue...that means that when you're here, if we have any work projects, wuch as repairing fences/stalls/cleaning up and around the barn/ even ocasional mucking and feeding and watering, then you will need to help out. Partial board: We feed your horse and muck their stalls on weekdays but YOU feed and muck on weekends, and help out with Rescue work (which also may include grooming rescue horses! And helping feed all the horses and mucking stalls). (also, we turn out/bring in your horse both am + pm) (if you want your horse to have hay then you give them hay, this also goes for putting on blankets or flymasks ect.) Pasture board: Your horse is fed for you in the pasture. YOU provide and do anything extra: such as hay, blankets, flymasks, ect. Also must help out with rescue work. Co-op to US means this: You board your horse here for half the price of full board and recieve full board status BUT you allow us, the rescue, to use your horse for riding or lesson horse. Our barn is a lot of work but it is all for the good of our rescue horses and to help this facility work and our board is very cheap. It's simple: pay $235 or less and do a little work...or go to the stable 5 miles down the road and pay $400 p/month min. ...i know i'd rather pay the $235 a work a little. lol.

Everyone else has covered what self, semi, and full board are. To me, "co-op board" is a situation in which you rent property with or a barn with other people, and share the workload.
I've had my horse on self, semi, pasture, and co-op ... now I just have to experience full. :P My personal preference is semi - that's what she's on now - because at this point in my life I don't have the time or means to make it down to the barn more than once a day.
