Wink

The vet said everything looked normal except that her inflammation levels were abnormally high. Normal is 1 to 4, and she is a 6. That could indicate a virus or infection, except she doesn't have a temperature. It could also indicate some strange problem with her digestive tract that we don't know what it could be, or he said the other possibility, and the most likely, is that she's got cancer. He said her weight loos has nothing to do with the feed she's getting, whatever she has is just using her up. The stress of moving her could have triggered something. I'm going to call the other vet I was using a few years ago as well... I remember something about her inflammation levels being high back then but I think we attributed it to tying up stuff.

He wants to put her on bute and some antibiotics to see if it helps for 2 weeks. I'm also cutting her selenium/vit e/probiotic and magnesium supplements out and replacing them with an all-in-one magnesium, multivitamin, selenium and extra vitamin B liquid supplement, and adding a cup of soybean meal to her diet (all this will be done gradually). The soybean is supposed to be a good source of lysine, protein, and phosphorus which she is a little low in all three areas.

She looked a little better today, hoping for the best. As soon as she gets some shoes on I'm going to take her for short rides on the beach, her favorite place. She really comes alive when we go there

I was just reading more about tying up, apparently horses with chronic tying up can suffer from kidney failure due to the myoglobin (pigment released from damaged muscle) particles being too large to be filtered properly by the kidney.

More things to test for

Have you ever had her tested for ulcers? Dixie had this problem and was having eating/weight problems while it was going on. Ask you vet and see what he says. I'd be interested to know the answer too. She went on some medication and was better the first day!
