There are many different brands of electrolytes to give, and as I don't know where you live, I can't tell what brands are best for your area. Also, I need to know what sort of work your horse is doing, since there are basically two types of electrolytes, one for sprint type equine athletes and one for endurance/trail/heat-exhaustion type. If you are looking for an electrolyte for use during long-lasting events in hot, humid weather, you need to get the kind designed for that. The sprint/racing type of electrolytes administered to a horse with heat exhaustion can cause myositis (tying up) or even a heart attack.

When looking for electrolytes for long-term events, a rule of thumb: Never give one that has sodium bicarbonate in it. Sometimes called "bicarb," "Baking soda," "soda," "bicarbonate of soda," or "NaHCO." You want an electrolyte formulated for endurance horses.

Hope that is helpful!

Hey Laura...

thanks that helps a lot. the horse I am riding... yes he gets worked quite a bit. I ride him 6 times a week, jumping 2 or 3 times. Other times i work on dressage.

I got a small package of vitamins/electrolytes... he does not drink a lot so a bought like a $1.00 syringe (not sure how you spell it) so I shoot it up his mouth once or twice a day when I am at the barn. I hope it works!

thanks!

mel

Hmmmm.... thanks for the info Laura. I'll check the electrolytes I'm feeding Hush in case it has baking soda in it. Perhaps that's contributing to her problem?

OMG, Tapestry, I had no idea that you were giving Hush electrolytes, or I would've mentioned it! Yes, do check that it is the right kind!

You shouldn't need to do that twice a day, once should be fine. If you are giving electrolytes, it's very important that you offer the horse cool, fresh water every hour or so.

Hmm.....not sure what you mean by "two little ones." I would say that you only need one DOSE per day, and if you want to split that one dose into to smaller ones (given before and after a workout) that that should be fine. Most people I know, however just give the one dose, either before or after.
