I feed my tb 3 times a day. He gets free choice hay, 1/3 ice cream bucket of soaked beetpulp with the same amount of bran(wheat). he also gets approx. 2lbs of 14% pellets and 3lbs of step 2 maintance feed. at each feeding. It seems to keep the weight on with reg. exercise. He was neglected before i got him and was terribly skinny and 2 years later is finally looking like a horse. Alittle bit more muscle in the butt and he'll be perfect. good luck with your ones.
Claire.

Buckeye Ultimate Finish! Works like a charm, its like 24% fat! I feed my OTTB's 12% grain, alfalfa and grass hay, as much as they will eat and then a cupfull of the Ultimate Finish a feeding.

All our OTTBs get Challenger 14%, beet pulp, boiled barley (yes, I cook it every day)...great for weight gain without making them too sharp), black sunflower seeds and hay (30% alfalfa, 70% timothy. Four of these horses live outside unblanketed (except for one who is blanketed if it is really cold. One gelding that came in was grossly underweight and in under 3 months put on 160 lbs. He has gone from being cranky to being a big puppy dog.

my hard keepers get lots and lots of hay, and 2 cups of soybean meal a day, 1 cup of sunflower seeds a day, and for the really hard keeper she also gets a powdered vegetable fat supplement (same thing as vegetable oil, but dry).

Hi Tapestry,
What is the name of the powdered supplement. Is it widely distributed, do you know. I'm wondering if I would be able to get it in Alberta.

Thanks

My running quarter [off the track] gets this:

free choice bermuda [he picks at it]
6 pounds rice bran a day
free choice beet pulp
and Equine Fat Supplment.

Only problem is he gets hot off the equine fat stuff...

I love hearing what everyone feeds...there is such a huge diversity of feeds out there and it's sometimes hard to find the perfect combination! I am currently feeding 1/2 alfalfa 1/2 local grass hay for all of my horses, plus my TB's get a mix of flax, complete pellet, happy trails extruded, and all-around supplement...in varying amounts for each horse. This seems to be putting weight on my "Starvin Marvin"... Which makes me so happy!

I feed my OTTB mare. Alfalfa hay and Local hay 3x a day. One flake of each breaky, lunch, dinner....

Beet pulp lots of it pretty much as much as she would eat in one meal, cob/pellet mixture, ground flax, senior extruded feed (can't remember what step it was tho)

She did adventually put SOME weight on but was to sick after awhile to gain anymore weight.
