Rescued HorsesIn a recent article, I wrote about buying a horse. In the article I said, "unless you are an experienced horse person with good facilities, I would not recommend rescuing a horse". I was contacted by J & M Acres, a horse rescue facility in Maple Ridge who had some concerns with my comments. I would like to elaborate and clarify my opinions about rescuing horses. I do support horse rescue operations like the one I spoke with. They guarantee all the horses they rescue and offer continuing support for new owners. They told me that 98% of the 100 + horses they have rescued have become safe family horses. They try very hard to suit a horse to perspective buyers, making sure the horse has enough basic training to be a pleasure horse. They sent me testimonials from happy customers and too much information to include. If you are interested in rescuing a horse independently, you should be aware of what you may be in for. Using a reputable agent that has a proven track record would be a much less risky venture. Rescue horses are only horses that have had poor homes in the past. A horse is a horse. Do not disregard the possibility of rescuing a horse, it could be a very rewarding experience. Responsibility for finding a safe, reliable horse should ultimately be on the people looking for a horse. If you do not have the experience to draw on to buy the right horse, find someone to help you. An operation like J&M can help you find an appropriate horse for a reasonable price. There are many conciencious people selling horses but there are just as many unscrupulous horse traders. Buying a horse because it is cheap is not always as good a deal as it may seem. People will sell you what you think you want. What you want and what you need are often different. "The most important thing is to make an informed decision when buying or rescuing a horse. Be patient and honest with yourself about your own ability to handle and ride your horse. There is a horse out there for every rider." Will Clinging 2004 (c) |
