Ask The Equine Nutritionist
Hello. I'd like to know which part of a walnut tree is toxic for horses, I know about the bark, but what about the leaves and the fruit capsules (?)? I have one walnut tree which isn't on the pastures or paddocks, but now that the leaves are falling some of them might end up where the horses can eat them.
Also, I've heard something about walnut shavings or the walnuts themselves causing founder if the horse walks on it too much?
Could you shed some light on what is it, exactly, if anything, about black walnut trees that might be harmful to horses?
Thank you!
All parts of the black walnut tree are potentially poisonous. I'd suggest you rake up the leaves just in case the horse should decide to eat them, I know it is unlikely but you never know. And yes the shavings will cause the horse to founder it he is bedded on them. The wood contains a toxin that interferes with circulation. It can enter thru the skin and feet if the horse stands on the wood, or through the gut if he eats any of it.
