Ask The Equine Nutritionist
I have an older, arthritic horse that seems to be getting harder keep weight on. Is there a supplement that I can feed that will help with his arthritis? I know there are many out there, MSN, Chondriotin Sulfate, Glaucosomine....do they do any good? Is one any better than another, or would combining them help? I have another horse that is younger, can I feed anything NOW that will help prevent or stave off old-age arthritis?
Feed supplements that might ease or prevent arthritis: It has been well shown that in the presence of glucosamine and chondroitin combined you get better regeneration of cartilage, the big question has always been is the glucosamine and chondroitin absorbed from the GI tract in sufficient quantity to affect the joints. The latest study by Hilary Clayton seems to show an improvement in soundness scores and joint mobility following oral supplementation of these compounds so the answer may be yes. Thus I would say you might well help your horse by giving him one of the proprietary supplements that supplies glucosamine in its various forms , chondroitin and other anti-oxidants, such as manganese, Vit C, ALA etc. As for prevention, we don't know yet but plenty of horses are fed the same supplements as a preventative measure.
