Ask The Equine Nutritionist

I like to feed black oil sunflower seeds to my horses. I've fed them for years to my mature horses in varying amounts, depending on whether I just wanted a shiny coat and strong hooves or if I wanted to add weight to them.

However, I now have a weanling, and was wondering if I could feed them to the weanling, and if so, how much?

As long as the black oil sunflower seeds are part of an overall balanced diet they will be fine.

They are principally a source of unsaturated fat and as such are useful.

For a growing baby they will need to be combined with other things to provide a ration balanced for minerals and protein content. Use them principally to provide extra calories in the form of fat and for a source of unsaturated fat.

Please refer to the Equine Body Score System to make sure that the weanling does not score more than a "5." If so, reduce the amount of BOSS being fed.
