Ask The Equine Nutritionist
I am having a hard time getting ground flax here due to poor crops. I finally got my pet store to order in some ground flax for me, but when I picked it up yesterday, its actually linseed...they told me its the same thing. The bag says its 4.5% fat, where I know that ground flax is 30% fat...how can they be the same thing?
Can you help me with this?
ANSWER: What you have there is Linseed meal, which is the remains of the ground flax/linseed AFTER the oil has been extracted. Linseed meal is a perfectly acceptable animal feed but is not a high fat feed. It is mostly used as a protein source.
Keep looking for the whole flax, you will find it eventually.
All flax is grown in Canada and is shipped into the USA. So unless you live in Canada, local growing conditions won't affect the supply.
