Ask The Equine Nutritionist

I have a 2yr old that developed kidney disease and we need to cut down on proteins, and take out calcium, mineral, and salt out of his diet. I feed flax seed - should I take this out of his diet? He gets orchard grass right now as much as he will eat,
extruded 3lbs 2x a day 10% fat
oats 3lbs 2x a day

I have tried to find information of Kidney disease but I have not been successful - any suggestions on the diet?

I thought about herbs, but I don't know of any that might help?

Ouch there isn't much than can help here. Grass hay only and minimal salt
protein etc.

I would cut the flax to 2 oz per day, it is mostly fat which he is going to need.

The problem is that the 2 yr old needs minerals to develop bone but you can't give him much as he cannot excrete them.
Make sure he gets enough calcium/magnesium which he will from the grass hay. Stay away from legume hay of any kind (no clover, no alfalfa).
