Beet Pulp for Sand Colic Prevention?
QUESTION:
I
went to buy some psyllium (or whatever it's spelled) to help avoid sand
colic because I live in dusty Arizona. The guy at the feedstore said that
they don't carry it, but he uses a "handful of beet pulp" on the horse's hay
and it works too. I have never heard of this and don't really see how it
could help that much.
ANSWER:
Any wet fiber added to the feed will help with colic prevention. You
could just wet the hay, or add soaked beet pulp or metamucil. You
could add soaked alfalfa cubes or any other soaked fiber source. But
the best way is to make sure that there is enough moistened fiber in the
diet.
